POSITION OVERVIEW

Reporting into the Director of External Communications, the Public Relations Manager is responsible for managing many of Saint-Gobain North America’s external communication initiatives, specifically with media relations and the placement of positive, proactive earned media stories around North America to help shape the company’s reputation.

The objective of this position is to provide Saint-Gobain’s North American region and businesses with consistently excellent communications counsel and materials related to key initiatives and reputational issues, including those associated with operations, environmental sustainability, and other public relations needs. The position requires a deep understanding of best practices across the full range of corporate communications, including media relations, impeccable writing skills, and an understanding of current events and issues facing manufacturing companies.

This individual must have existing positive relationships with news reporters, the ability to learn complex issues quickly and the ability to distill complex topics into understandable communications for broad audiences. This is a highly visible position that requires a positive attitude, the ability to effectively navigate a heavily matrixed organization, the ability to simultaneously manage multiple complex projects, and a willingness to be a team player.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILTIES

  • Develop and drive a calendar of positive external announcements at locations throughout the United States and Canada where the company does business
  • Building and maintaining relationships with key news reporters in the communities where the company does business
  • Assist in managing the response to inbound media inquiries
  • When needed, support the organization’s crisis responses by drafting communications materials and providing counsel
  • Developing and driving a calendar of social media content, and measuring the engagement and efficacy of the content
  • Build and maintain relationships with a broad variety of internal company stakeholders, including professionals in the Legal, EHS&S, Operations, Sales and Risk Management departments
  • Serve as the project manager for various external communications campaigns, focused on specific regions or initiatives

PROFIL RECHERCHÉ

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in media and communications, English, journalism, marketing or any related field is required
  • 5-7 years of experience in corporate communications or media relations is required, including a demonstrated track record of securing positive earned media coverage
  • Existing positive relationships with news reporters is required
  • Experience working in a communications role at a manufacturing company, or as a reporter in a newsroom, is preferred
  • A master’s degree in business, marketing or another related field is preferred

 

TECHNICAL KNOW-HOW SKILLS

  • Flawless written and excellent oral communication skills
  • Proficiency in the use of word processing software tools
  • An analytical mind and problem-solving skills
  • In-depth knowledge of communications best practices, preferably with a specialty in media relations or issues management
  • Strong project management skills
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • A positive attitude and ability to build constructive relationships with colleagues

PROBLEM-SOLVING

This role is one that is highly complex, with many points of contact across the enterprise and international (at times) – across functions and geographies/sites/levels of roles within the organization.   It requires highly nuance understanding of issues and the various perspectives at play.   Consistent exercise of independent judgment and discretion in matters of significance required.
