A coater is a transformation line that takes as input glass panes and coats them with a thin film (using magnetron sputtering) that gives the glass added functionalities. The coating process is performed under vacuum. Opening of the line (i.e. shut-down, or SD) is done regularly - typically every two months - to perform necessary operations as maintenance, cleaning and raw material exchange. Organization and preparation are key to optimize these operations, minimize the opening time and secure the restart of the line.

  • Identify the different tasks, their sequence and the organization during the shut-down, required to define the critical path,
  • Decompose the tasks in elementary steps and evaluate their duration,
  • Benchmark of different coater configurations (material/suppliers/operators & teams) and analyze gaps and differences,
  • Analyze where the possibilities of improvement exist and elaborate with the local team solutions to improve duration of critical tasks,
  • Use and implement 4.0 tools developed for shutdown follow-up and reporting Train local teams,
