Position description

The Automation Engineer will utilize knowledge of engineering or scientific principles, theories and concepts to provide technical support and solutions to manufacturing. Objectives should include but are not limited to: improving yield, efficiency, reducing cost and other continuous improvement activities. The incumbent will be expected to plan and execute projects based on engineering or manufacturing department goals.

This position will provide leadership in the implementation and support of plant systems integration and data acquisition systems. The incumbent will be responsible for the implementation and integration of project specific Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) and system integration solutions. This position will also be responsible for maintaining MES which will serve as the main link between factory equipment, ERP and the factory MES software. The incumbent will interface with process experts to identify and solve safety, quality, delivery and cost problems through Saint-Gobain’s operation excellence system (WCM).

This incumbent will be responsible for overseeing manufacturing and technical projects and process improvements. He/she will review systems capabilities, and provide technical support for upgrades and improvements to manufacturing and administrative systems and hardware - evaluate, report, and recommend improvements and changes to controls and computer systems.

Principal End Results:


  • Plan, devise, design, and participate in the completion of MES projects towards long-term optimization, systems integration, and process improvement.
  • Work effectively with stakeholders to assist in definition of business needs as they relate to MES implementation.
  • Responsible for technical deliverables for the MES system.
  • Manage and report on adjustments to scope, schedule, and issues.
  • Participate in strategic and tactical planning sessions, must be able to work independently as well as part of the team. 
  • Perform technical analysis activities, such as requirements gathering and gap analysis of user requirements.
  • Install and improve use of automation, controls, and programming.
  • Provide hands-on assistance to Operators and Manufacturing personnel on the production floor to identity opportunities for process improvements and implement solutions.
  • Lead, direct, develop, and train personnel on new processes, equipment, and procedures as required while maintaining existing process documentation.
  • Independently manage a workload consisting of long-term projects and unplanned day-to-day priorities.
  • Write project reports and make oral presentations of work progress to articulate and convey project developments to all appropriate supervisory, management, and manufacturing personnel.
  • Maintain technical competence and keep informed on new developments in materials, process technology, and product applications to ensure that the most appropriate methods and materials are used.
  • Responsible for compliance with applicable corporate and governmental guidelines, rules, and regulations pertaining to health, safety, and environmental issues.
  • Supports all ISO activity.
  • Assist in evaluating and selecting automation hardware and software necessary to meet current and future manufacturing requirements.
  • Provide input to managing the controls and automation systems testing, quality control, data retrieval and training for all packaging and processing equipment.
  • Assist with assessing the effectiveness and maintainability of new automation systems and managing the automation change process for existing equipment.

  • Develop and maintain control system documentation and documentation change control procedures.




  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Materials Science, Computer Science, Ceramics, Chemistry or Physics
  • 1-3 Years Manufacturing Experience
  • A seasoned knowledge of the principles and theories of the discipline and their application
  • Experience with CAD, DOE, SPC, Manufacturing 4.0, Automation and electronics knowledge is a plus
