Position description

The Shipping Supervisor oversees and directs activities pertaining to material management, equipment problems, truck loading, truck traffic, housekeeping, cycle counting, inventory management and management of warehouse crew member’s daily activities. This position also maintains work place organization and ensures good housekeeping practices by holding employees accountable for their assigned work. This is done by ensuring activities are carried out in compliance with all environmental, health, and safety requirements, policies, and procedures in a manner consistent with CertainTeed Roofing’s Vision, Mission, Values and Objectives (VMVO).


  • Knowledge of cycle count procedures and how it can affect inventory and all warehouse functions and proficient in SAP system and applications.
  • Inventory storage quality as it applies to wet wraps, identification, torn or missing baggies, broken pallets, standing water and pot holes in the yard areas.
  • Maintains positive actions and open communication with all employees.
  • Ensures compliance with all safety procedures and establishes/promotes the maintenance of a safe, accident free and healthy work environment.
  • Enforce plant rules and regulations. Manage time records, attendance reporting & disciplinary reporting of warehouse crew Must be able to counsel effectively; utilize progressive discipline, taking corrective actions when warranted. 
  • Assure warehouse lighting infrastructure is operational and functioning for efficiency and safety.
  • Communication between truck drivers and warehouse employees must be maintained at all times.
  • All inventory locations need to be maintained with the correct inventory to assure shipping documents are accurate – first in /first out should always be the priority.
  • Enforce adherence to EHS Systems by workforce, lead by example.
  • Report all EH&S incidents – Injuries/Recordables, Near Misses, First Aid, Environmental and Property/Equipment Damage.
  • Ensure adherence to Waste Management and Recycling responsibilities.
  • Participate in Incident & Near Miss Investigations to determine root cause and corrective actions.
  • Participate in the development, understanding and review of all position SOP’s/JSA’s.
  • Conduct weekly SMAT Audits or any other requirements as requested by Manager.


  • Associate degree or equivalent, complementary work experience working in distribution in a supervisory capacity is highly desirable.
  • Strong computer skills to deliver effective reporting utilizing business warehouse tools and MS Office, SAP and other software programs.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Capable of leading a warehouse team and able to define clear vision, goals and service standards.
  • Ability to manage projects, work independently and communicate effectively to all areas and levels of the Warehouse team.
  • Professionally and effectively problem solve, and remain calm in high-stress situations.
  • The ability to shift back and forth between the various functions and multitask throughout the workday.
