Position description

POSITION SUMMARY

CertainTeed Gypsum operates a surface quarry in Nashville, Arkansas to supply gypsum to an adjacent wallboard plant.  As part of the mine staff, the Mine Engineer role ensures that the quarry operations are managed and development is the highest standards of safety, quality, efficiency/planning, and cost—delivering optimum raw gypsum to the Nashville Board Plant in a sustainable way.  

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • To ensure that the highest standards of safety are delivered, fully commensurate and complaint to local, national and company standards—ensuring a clean, safe and orderly work area
  • Provide technical and geological guidance regarding mine planning and sequencing
  • Observe exposed gypsum strata, take samples, and assist with drilling exploration as required
  • Coordinate the quality control testers, track, record and map the results of the quarry lab
  • Coordinate the surveying activity and provide aerial mapping services as required by the Nashville operations
  • Check daily reports against survey volume results and track overburden measurements
  • Provide geological, topographic, and rock quality information and contour maps to the Mine management and provide weekly, monthly and annual mining plans for the Mine Manager’s approval
  • Implement and monitor Geotechnical Mine Design for short, medium and long term mine stability
  • Develop the short and medium range mine planning/design, for the short, medium and long range planning – including volume and stripping ratio estimations
  • Collaborate Reserve and Resource estimate and mine plan with 3D Mining Software
  • Advise and report on geo-hazard observations and inspections
  • Provide guidelines for water management related to dewatering and effective surface water drainage
  • Perform staking activates to visualize the digging extents of digging sequences for equipment operators
  • Identify continuous improvement opportunities in the operations of the Nashville Quarry
  • Track key performance indicator (KPI’s) relative to rock quality, productivity and screen operation which are communicated to mine and plant staff
  • Provide leadership to process improvement teams utilizing the WCM tool box for continuous improvement and the reduction of losses
  • Develop and coordinate writing and review of SOP’s, SMP’s, and job instructions for the Nashville mining operation on the tools, and techniques ensuring effective deployment of best practices
  • Projects and actions to valorize the mining waste (tails/fines rejects and overburden material) into a by-product
  • Coordinate and supervise the restoration plan and environmental compliance calendar
  • Ensure compliance with legal mining operations requirements
  • Back-up the Mine Superintendent and/or the Mine Supervisor – if required

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering, Geological Engineering, Geology, or Mechanical Engineering
  • 3 years of experience in mine development/design, mineral exploitation and mapping of reserves
  • Subject matter expertise in the various principles and practices:
    • Strong understanding of mine planning and production efficiency strategies
    • Geology and understanding rock strata
    • Survey instrumentation and mapping
    • Computer applications related to mapping like GIS, Vulcan, AutoCAD
    • Focused Improvement/Practical Problem Solving
    • Quality and Process Control techniques
    • Other Continuous Improvement principles (e.g., Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, etc.)
  • The job demands a good level of:
    • Strategic Management of mineral resources – short, medium, and long term
    • Teamwork and coaching
    • People management and leadership
    • Strong communication skills and overall ability to share and inspire others and drive a continuous improvement culture
    • Technical mining and quarrying skills

PREFERRED OR DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum 5 years' prior mine engineering position is strongly preferred
  • Mechanical/maintenance experience/interest is a bonus
