Position description

The Senior Automation and Controls Engineer will be a key contributor in the Industrial Engineering Group at Sage Electrochromics. Primary focus will be on project engineering, equipment troubleshooting, production equipment improvements, product and process improvements, manufacturing support, and engineering documentation. The ideal candidate will have 5 to 10+ years of system integration experience (preferably glass processing or semi-conductor industries), demonstrated large-scale project leadership and the ability to carry the job from conception to completion, have a high level of expertise in PLC, HMI, and vision systems, and strong troubleshooting skills.

Essential Functions Include:

  • Project Management - Schedule, Plan, Rorecast, Resource, and manage all the technical activities of control applications and integration
  • Production Equipment Improvements/tToubleshooting
  • Engineering Design, Research, and Prototyping
  • Product and Process Improvements
  • Engineering Documentation

Responsibilities include:

  • Prepare, schedule, coordinate and monitor the assigned engineering projects
  • Perform overall quality control of the work: controls design and integration, budget, schedule, plans, and personnel’s performance and report regularly on project status
  • Assign responsibilities and mentor project team
  • Ability to coordinate and manage outside contractors and onsite resources to accomplish project tasks and goals in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Ability to interact with vendors/suppliers: selection, interview, monitor progress, develop solutions, etc.
  • Ability to develop and review specifications, develop program timelines and reports, perform design reviews, develop acceptance tests, and documentation packages
  • Monitor compliance to applicable codes, best practices, QA/QC policies, performance standards and specifications
  • Interact daily with internal customers to interpret their needs and requirements
  • Cooperate and communicate effectively with customer and other project participants to provide assistance and technical support
  • Review engineering deliverables and initiate appropriate corrective actions


    • Bachelor’s Degree Electrical/Automation and/or Controls Engineering or related field
    • 5+ years’ experience in Electrical/Automation and Controls Engineering, project management, equipment design/improvement or related experience
    • Experienced System Integrator with diverse background including PLC, HMI, VFD, motion controls, Siemens and Rockwell development tools and hardware
    • Experienced in control system design, commissioning and long term support.
    • Identify, understand and troubleshoot operational and functional issues providing resolution in a timely manner
    • Experience designing and deploying complex control system architectures with an eye towards future-proofing and redundancy concepts
    • Proficiency in managing multiple tasks simultaneously

    • Understand and ensure compliance with all relevant national safety regulations and quality standards

    • Glass related equipment, robotics, vacuum deposition / thin film deposition, or cleanroom experience is considered a plus

    • Demonstrated proficiency in Ladder Logic and Structured Text

    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
