Position description

The Data & Measurement Solutions group is looking for a Research Engineer to join their team within the Competency Research Labs at the Saint-Gobain Research North America center located in Northboro, MA. The Data & Measurement Solutions group works closely with Saint-Gobain’s various business units and translates data and foundational knowledge in metrology, programming, mechanical systems, and applied mathematics to tailored physical and digital solutions.

This position is looking for a driven, talented, and energetic engineer with strong knowledge of mechatronics and experience with DIY electronics, to support and lead the development of measurement systems for R&D and manufacturing applications, and the development of connected objects. The primary responsibilities of the job are summarized below:


  • Support 2-4 projects focused on the development of competencies and to the internal dissemination of information (25%), or driven directly by needs expressed by Saint-Gobain businesses (75%). In the latter case, any project work that involves external companies consists of the following:

o   Selection and technical evaluation of relevant technologies

o   Development of functional prototypes and field evaluation

o   Design iterations following feedback from internal or external customers

o   Development of final solution and transfer of technology to the business teams

  • Participate in the identification of internal needs and the establishment of projects with internal partners.
  • Participate in the identification and evaluation of potential external partners such as integrators, software developers, sensor/electronic/mechanical systems manufacturers, and engineering consulting companies.
  • Summarize project approaches and results in concise and accurate technical memos/reports.
  • Communicate project strategies and results to internal customers and management through formal presentations.
  • Champion efforts to drive HSE initiatives and consciousness in the organization. 



  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in mechatronics, mechanical engineering, robotics, electrical engineering, or related fields
  • Must have 2+ years of hands-on experience with building testing rigs, measurement systems, and electromechanical systems. Must be proficient with electronics and automation systems (including motion control).
  • Must be proficient with mechanical design (SolidWorks/CAD) and have a strong knowledge of machining techniques, including 3D printing for rapid prototyping
  • Experience with the development of systems reliant on DIY electronics (Raspberry Pi, Arduino, or similar) is preferred.
  • Experience with programming in C/C++/C# or Python and building LabVIEW programs is preferred.
  • Proven ability to execute experimental tests with minimal supervision and a focus on paying attention to details
  • Proven ability to think critically, strategize and organize tasks autonomously on assigned projects, and establish viable technical paths forward. Proven ability to iterate quickly on projects and redefine path forward as relevant
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills to communicate with all levels of management, customers, colleagues, and external partners.
  • Knowledge of sensors and non-destructive evaluation techniques, PCB design, industrial systems, and IoT/IIoT is a plus
  • Up to 15% travel may be required, subject to COVID-19 guidelines and restrictions
