Senior Research Engineer - CT Roofing

Position description

SGRNA is seeking an experienced multidisciplinary engineer to advance CertainTeed Roofing business’s core capabilities around wet-laid nonwoven glass fiber mats for reinforcing composite structures such as shingles and other roofing products. You will have the opportunity to work closely in multifunctional and diverse teams to translate complex problems into coherent research programs and make direct impacts in all technical aspects of the product, including

  • Performance and quality assessment
  • Production process tuning and control
  • Process and product quality improvement
  • New product development
  • Raw materials management

As a senior researcher, you will also contribute heavily in guiding the team’s activities from a strong foundation of scientific principles and research practices.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Work with senior researchers, partners, and stakeholders to organize business concerns and technical topics into coherent programs of research.
  • Investigate problems holistically and efficiently, drawing on both theoretical foundations to inform ideas and experimental finesse to bear them out.
  • Work collaboratively within multiple taskforces across multiple functions and take various roles to lead, execute, manage, and support projects.
  • Adapt to rapidly evolving business context to ensure that project milestones are targeted appropriately, but also maintain a scientific steadfastness to ensure that constant progress is maintained and efforts are not wasted.
  • Constantly look outside of their own expertise to ensure that the appropriate tools are being brought to bear on the problems at hand, whether it be to seek the support of others or to build new areas of expertise.
  • Provide guidance to junior researchers on experimental strategies and scientific principles.
  • Communicate effectively across all functions and levels of the organization to report on progress, ask for support, build consensus, persuade others, and drive projects.
  • Generally, provide technical support to existing activities and propose new activities to better support the business.


  • Demonstrated expertise in at least one of the following areas: Composite materials, Polymer physics / soft matter physics, Polymer/glass/silane chemistry, Colloid and interfacial science
  • Demonstrated project management skills, team collaboration, and oral, written and visual communication skills.
  • Ability to network/communicate within and out of group, as well as across disciplines.
  • Must possess a body of technical work commensurate with their years of experience including but not limited to: demonstration of hands-on new product and/or process development, familiarity with statistical tools, data analysis, and drawing conclusions based on a collection of basic data and interpretation.  
  • Confident, independently-motivated self-starter.
  • Demonstrated aptitude to quickly understand new concepts and technology and apply them.
  • Respectful communication and ability to collaborate in a team environment required. 
  • Develop ability to maintain composure and organize teams in high pressure situation.
  • Demonstrate adequate knowledge in HSE.


  • BS Degree with a minimum of 7+ years’ experience, or MS with 3+ years of experience, or entry level PhD in Materials Science/Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Soft Matter Physics, Textile Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or other related disciplines.
