Position description

The Analytical Technician is responsible to perform, according to documented ISO procedures or established guidelines, routine tests and calculations to determine physical and chemical properties of sample materials for research information and/or specifications. Works under limited supervision. Maintains a clean work area, is knolwedgeable of, and follows accepted laboratory safety procedures.

  • Performs physical, thermal and chemical tests and caluclations on samples to determine their properties. Testing may include flat plate cross strength, attrition, abrasion, water pore volume, apparent porosity, LOI, density, corrosion,  particle size, TMA, surface area,  DTA/TGA/DSC, zeta potential, and sample preparation for XRF and chemical (ICP) analysis. Recommends solutions regarding various problem areas which may occur during testing or flow of departmental work to supervisor. Provides accurate data to end user and strives to continuously improve the Analytical lab.
  • Observes and records test data maintaining historical data.
  • Maintains and calibrates equipment according to ISO work instructions providing accurate data to end users.


  • High school diploma or equivalent including math and science classes with three (3) years experience in a laboratory environment including XRF and ICP; or, technical college level science classes with one (1) year of  previous experience in a laboratory environment including XRF and ICP; or Bachelor of Science degree; some related work experience preferred.
  • Basic knowledge  of conventional chemistry, math, science, and analytical chemistry with the ability to accurately interpret data. 
  • Must be computer articulate. 
  • Must have planning/organizing/time management abilities, effective communication, flexibility/adaptability and analysis skills. 
  • Possess working knowledge of the relevant technical discipline.
  • Provides an example to working and complying  with safety/health practices and regulations.
  • Understanding of ISO 9000 processes and procedures is desired.
