Position description

The research scientist will be part of an organic growth strategy in developing new materials for the business.  Primary job responsibilities include developing the growth processes of new single crystalline materials such as Ga2O3 leading to new product sales.  Supporting responsibilities of this position include identifying, testing and maintaining raw material stocks for the research and development group; conducting growth trials of crystalline materials; carrying out furnace design changes and modification; tracking performance properties of grown crystals; and assisting in the transition of R&D activities to the production group.  The research scientist should be familiar with semiconducting oxide materials, various high temperature oxides such as sapphire, general crystallography, and a variety of crystal growth methods such as Czochralski, EFG, and Bridgman, among others.  

Essential Functions:

  • Assist in the development of Ga2O3 single crystal growth processes, including the planning and carrying out growth trials, and reporting on overall developments
  • Provide support for characterization of Ga2O3 crystals, either those grown internally or sourced from external vendors or collaborators.  This includes characterization of material in house, and management of material sent for analysis externally
  • Assist in defect identification, analysis, material improvement and scale up of EFG grown oxides
  • Stay abreast of and provide information to others at Saint-Gobain Crystals on technical advances in the field of functional materials with a focus on materials for power electronics



  • Bachelors of Science in Physics, Chemistry, Electrical Engineering/Computer Science, Materials Science or related field is required
  • Masters of Science in Physics, Materials Science or related field is required
  • PhD in Physics, Materials Science or related field is preferred

Work Experience:

  • Ceramic materials development – crystal growth, processing, characterization, etc. – 5 years required
  • Crystal growth technologies – 5 years required

Practical/Technical Knowledge:

  • Deep understanding of solid state physics and/or material science is required
  • Experience with computer software appropriate to R&D environment is required. Must include experience with some (but not all) of the following: LabVIEW, 3D CAD (Solidworks, CREO, Inventor, etc.) and MS Office Suite, Minitab or other related programs
  • Experience with defect engineering of ceramic materials and devices is required
  • Familiarity with semiconducting materials, their use in electronics applications and modular instrumentation with the ability to use these for materials testing and characterization is preferred

Problem Solving:

  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem solving skills using root cause analysis methods are required
  • Ability to work in a complex organizational structure, government funded matrix organization is required
  • Ability to be proactive in analyzing and recommending solutions to problems is required


  • Effective written and oral communication skills are necessary for interface with internal team members, other operations within Saint-Gobain Crystals, and outside experts.  Ability to make presentations in front of large groups is required.
