Research Engineer Non Destructive Evaluation – Ultrasonics

Position description

Saint-Gobain’s North American R&D center is looking for a Non Destructive Evaluation (NDE) engineer with expertise in ultrasonic methods. The incumbent will be responsible for developing internal competencies and implementing NDE methods in support of manufacturing process control and product quality control. Activities will range from identifying needs, bringing in new NDE methods, developing different ways to use traditional NDE methods, through to proof of principle lab experiments, development of data processing routines, working with Business Unit partners and integrators to implement and qualify industrial solutions, and ensuring the sustainability of the solution.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Work with R&D partners, and manufacturing & process engineers to understand inline measurement and quality control needs, and scope projects.
  • Manage and execute projects following a standard project management approach.
  • Develop a vision of Saint-Gobain NDE needs. Follow NDE methods technical development at the academic and industrial level and develop internal competencies as relevant.
  • Document results in a concise and accurate way.
  • Review projects with management and internal customers through formal presentations.

                                                           

COMPETENCIES:    

  • Must possess a body of technical work commensurate with their years of experience including but not limited to: demonstration of theoretical and hands-on expertise in ultrasonic techniques
  • Familiarity with other NDE techniques is a plus (acoustic emission, microwave, capacitive techniques)
  • Familiarity with ultrasonic equipment from Mistras is a plus
  • Familiarity with statistical tools, data analysis and process control is a plus
  • Demonstrated ability to draw conclusions based on a collection of data and interpretation, and technical documents.  
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully lead projects in a complex environment involving collaborators working in manufacturing facilities, and external partners.
  • Respectful communication and ability to collaborate in a team environment required. 

    

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Bachelor of Science Degree with a minimum of 3+ years’ experience, or an entry level candidate with Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering or Materials Science, and experience with ultrasonic NDE techniques.
  • Successful development of NDE-related experiments at the lab scale.
  • Demonstrated technical judgments/accomplishments, project leadership, team collaboration, and oral and written communication skills.
