Senior Process Development Engineer II - CertainTeed

Position description

CertainTeed is looking for driven, talented, and energetic engineers to join our team working on projects that focus on manufacturing process optimization and new product development for CertainTeed Gypsum’s plasterboard products. As a Senior Process Development engineer, the candidate will – through application of research and development technologies – enhance the fundamental understanding of manufacturing processes as required to optimize plant performance regarding safety, reliability, process control, quality and cost. Phases of development include pilot trials, scale-up, and implementation of R&D processes and new products into manufacturing. The candidate will take project objectives and transform them into actionable tasks including research of technologies, design and execution of experimentation, analysis of results, and generation of IP and technical reports.

Under the supervision of the R&D Manager - Process, this Senior level engineering position is accountable for overseeing manufacturing and technical development projects and process improvements. This position will lead the development and implementation of new processes, techniques & tools which will be confirmed through the application of engineering fundamentals and process control statistical tools. The candidate will ensure processes are centered, capable and in control in partnership with the manufacturing teams to ensure the successful implementation of the project. The ability to communicate across all levels of the organization and manage projects with various stakeholders will be essential for this role to influence others and drive projects.

 MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Utilizes sound technical knowledge of materials, processes, techniques, and products to improve on product performance to reduce costs, to maximize production, and to support new knowledge research.
  • Manages multiple projects simultaneously, on time, well documented and within budget to meet business and customer objectives.
  • Leads manufacturing trials within process area – trial plan preparation, planning with local teams, risk mitigation strategies, trial execution – to promote understanding and innovation.
  • Conducts laboratory scale studies as required or to prepare manufacturing trials.
  • Supports R&D teams with planning & execution of manufacturing trials for new product developments.
  • Works efficiently with Malvern Innovation Center (MIC), SGR-North America (SGR-NA), Gypsum Process Innovation (GPI), and other R&D resources to identify and develop practical solutions for CTG processes.
  • Manages and documents projects effectively under minimal supervision by a technical leader.
  • Actively research technical literature, prior art, and patents, and seek out potential intellectual property opportunities in collaboration with legal team.
  • Maintains thorough documentation and communication of projects, trial reports, scientific developments.
  • Communicates to all stakeholders from plant personnel, operations management, finance, purchasing, marketing and research and development to drive projects forward.
  • Continuously evaluates workplace for safety concerns and ensures behavioral safety initiatives are performed to goal levels.
  • Seeks out others to enhance and streamline development and decision making.
  • Understands Gate Process methodology/ideology and utilizes and incorporates it in research projects.
  • Must possess a body of technical work commensurate with their years of experience (including but not limited to: IP, Patents, and technical documents).   
  • Demonstrated knowledge in HSE and IP.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • BS Degree with a minimum of 12+ years’ experience, or MS with 7+ years of experience, or PhD with 3+ years plus demonstrated technical judgement/accomplishments.
