Position description

Under the supervision of the Materials and Product Development Leader, the incumbent is accountable to all R&D employees to assist in projects through testing and tasks.  This role allows the intern to learn many new skills while attending college courses (part-time) or during summer or alternating semesters (full-time).  The intern is expected to perform many different types of tests including weathering, color measurement, mechanical properties, and several analytical tests.  The intern is also expected to develop their skills and take on more responsibilities over the intern period.

Duties/Responsibilities

Interaction with project engineers and chemist

  • Assist product development engineers by performing tests to validate the performance of new products
  • Provide assistance to chemists to create new formulations for our products
  • Collect and post-process the test data into an organized format (typically MS Excel)
  • Provide test results in a clear, concise way the communicates the conclusion effectively
  • Learn new test and analysis techniques to help advance the project

 

Types of testing

  • Assist product development engineers by performing tests to validate the performance of new products

The intern is expected to understand the established company and industry standard test methods, and must assemble and evaluate concise, accurate test results.   The intern is expected communicate their results well to co-works.  The intern is expected to work safely at all times within the lab.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge/Skills

  • Good mechanical and problem solving skills.

  • Ability to read, comprehend, and implement detailed, written or oral instructions.

  • Ability to interpret blueprints used for the procurement of tooling and equipment.

  • Must be able to work in team environment. 

  • High attention to detail required.

  • Focus on safety of self and co-workers in all situations.

Education

  •  Current students in Chemical, Materials Science, Polymer Sciences and other Engineering programs will be considered for this position.

Working Conditions

This position is located within a vinyl siding R&D facility and will require the incumbent to have exposure to noise, dust, and hazards associated with R&D equipment and tools. Working areas may not be ventilated or air-conditioned. The incumbent must be able to withstand heat and chemical odors. The incumbent is required to comply with all safety requirements, including use of the personal protection equipment required for this position.  The incumbent must have possession of or ability to obtain licensure for a motor vehicle.
