Position description

Under the supervision of the Design/Build Leader, the position will work alongside Engineers, Designers, and Tool & Die Makers in the procurement of tooling and process equipment for the CertainTeed R&D site in Jackson, Michigan.  The position will gain exposure to CAD, blueprints and training on all machinery within the R&D site.  The position will gain experience in the design and build of extrusion tooling.


  • Program and operate CNC equipment to manufacture tooling components.
  • Program and operate Wire EDM equipment to manufacture tooling components.
  • Assist design team in verifying the accuracy of tooling dimensions and drawings.
  • Recommend changes and modifications to improve overall quality or reduce costs.
  • Determine process to be used in the machining of tooling.
  • Conduct test runs with completed tools and dies to ensure that parts meet specifications, making adjustments as necessary.
  • Cut, shape, and trim blanks or blocks to specified lengths or shapes.
  • Design jigs, fixtures, and templates for use as work aids in the fabrications of parts or products.
  • Verify dimensions, alignments, and clearances of finished parts for conformance to specifications, using measuring instruments such as calipers, gauge blocks, micrometers and dial indicators.




The incumbent works under the parameters as defined by corporate policy.  The incumbent relies on education to interpret blue prints and build tooling and equipment in the most efficient manner possible.  The incumbent refers deviations in protocol to the Design/Build Leader.

  • Current students in Mechanical Engineering program will be considered for this internship.  Students in Chemical, Materials Science, Polymer Sciences and other Engineering programs will be considered as well.

Working Conditions

This position is located within a vinyl siding R&D facility and will require the incumbent to have exposure to noise, dust, and hazards associated with R&D equipment and tools. Working areas may not be ventilated or air-conditioned. The incumbent must be able to withstand heat and chemical odors. The incumbent is required to comply with all safety requirements, including use of the personal protection equipment required for this position.
