Position description

The co-op is responsible for accurate and timely materials analysis and reporting data through concise reports and databases to support the Gypsum Product Group.  Utilizing a variety of preparation tools and analytical testing equipment, the co-op will follow CertainTeed and 3rd party test methods to support new product development, process optimization, and environmental/health/safety considerations. This is an excellent opportunity to work directly on chemical mixing and formulation, elemental spectroscopy (ICP, XRF, AA), thermal and mechanical analysis (DSC, TGA, DMA), and more.

This individual will be responsible for preparing samples, conducting experiments, and critically analyzing data to characterize the chemical/mechanical properties of gypsum products and their raw materials. Additionally, the co-op will support the testing group in method development, assessment of new test instruments, adherence to overall safety/5S principles, and data analysis. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES  

  • Perform analyses, critically analyze data and write accurate and concise reports to respond to requestors in a timely manner.
  • Prepare samples and reagents required for testing of raw materials used in gypsum boards.
  • Prepare samples of gypsum board for analysis of board properties (structure, fire performance, moisture resistance, and more).
  • Contribute and adhere to overall lab safety and 5S principles. 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Current enrollment and progress towards a Bachelor’s degree in a natural science, material science, or engineering discipline strongly preferred. Ideal candidates will have a basic understanding of chemistry or process engineering and some experience working in a chemical laboratory.
  • Hunger for learning practical analytical techniques and the working principle upon which they are based.
  • Strong communication and critical thinking skills in order to discern the proper path for analyzing materials and make sound judgements regarding safety and quality of testing.
  • Excellent interpersonal and problem solving abilities to work effectively in laboratory group.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office programs and adaptable to new software.

Job may require long periods of standing, and some lifting (less than 25 lbs).  Must be capable of wearing personal protective equipment necessary to comply with government and company safety standards whenever engineered methods of reducing hazards or physical requirements cannot be reasonably accommodated.
