Position description

In the Senior Manager – Environmental Communications role, you will provide Saint-Gobain’s North American region and businesses with consistently excellent communications strategy and materials related to our environmental remediation efforts across the US. This position requires a deep understanding of communications best practices across the full range of corporate communications, public relations, issues management, and reputation management. You will demonstrate solid experience in corporate communications, the ability to learn and react to complex issues in a timely manner, and the ability to put in place clear and replicable disciplines for media, employees, government officials, local authorities and senior executives is essential.

The Senior Manager of Environmental Communications will work side-by-side with legal, manufacturing sites and internal management on complex and diverse projects. They will also be relied upon as the primary subject matter expert for Saint-Gobain’s remediation projects to include the management of complex reputational issues. This person will develop and maintain excellent client relationships, encourage a collaborative approach within the various business segment teams, and provide education to internal stakeholders on integrated communications planning, public relations agency management and the broader reputational media landscape. This person will have significant input in developing strategic communications plans for business and regional leadership teams on key emerging issues including but not limited to site-related issues, industry thought leadership development, and corporate social responsibility.

Responsibilities:

  • Creation of issues management communications process for active issues to include, but not limited to short and long-term planning for federal, state and local issues management, and public relations.

  • Creation of long-term methodologies for clear, concise execution of Public Relations programs (regional, state, local) and manage multiple streams of work, management of dependencies, definition of appropriate success metrics and cost management.

  • Work in tandem with other leaders and business/functional leaders to develop and formulate targeted project plans related to sustainable development promotional campaigns, stakeholder outreach and other communications activities.

  • Confer with internal and external team members in selecting the best suite of experts both inside and outside of Saint-Gobain.

  • Partner ad assist stakeholders in drafting appropriate plans and budgets based on clear scope of work. 

  • Work with legal, EHS, Communications, as well as external consultants to drive current reputation issues and activities and metrics.

  • Strategic and scenario based planning that enable “big picture thinking” and evaluation of short, medium and long-term planning to include:

    • Developing a specific communications plan and activities for active issues

    • Communication with management for high-profile projects such as environmental remediation, product liability issues and climate change.

    • Work with business leaders and stakeholders to manage annual and/or project based budgets of sustainable development and issues communications. Provide key metrics and monitor the effectiveness of those projects.

    • Effectively present best practices.

  • Reputation Communications Planning working closely with Legal, EHS, Corporate branding and business teams to full develop a robust and effective reputations and issues management.

  • Core communications owner for long-term reputation planning activities to include message mapping, executive positioning, content development, white papers, panel discussions, speaking engagements, technical seminars and trade show participation.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelors’ degree in marketing/advertising/issues or crisis management or other communications related field.

  • 8+ years’ experience in a communications role within a manufacturing company is highly preferred.

  • Experience within issues management, sustainability, environmental stewardship, and public relations crisis work is ideal and highly preferred. 

  • Strong experience in brand and reputation management.

  • Ability to consult and influence without authority.

  • Budget management skills.

  • Strong project management and best practices experience.

  • Ability to be available for minimal travel at times, of approximately 10% for offsite meetings, tradeshows, and other potential business based needs.
