This role is working with British Gypsum, part of the Saint-Gobain group is the UKs leading manufacturer of interior lining systems with over 100 years’ experience in plaster, plasterboard and ceiling solutions, we already have a multitude of high-performance products and systems that can be seen around you in daily life.


What impact will you have on our business?

British Gypsum are best known as a manufacturer and fundamentally that’s who we are, however people are often surprised to know that we have a sizeable mining infrastructure across the UK&I that supplies raw gypsum to all our sites!


This position is based at our Barrow plant (Loughborough) looking after the biggest underground mine we have in the UK, working with a team of 50 mining professionals you will be responsible for all aspects of the mine working closely with the manufacturing plant to ensure continuous production.


We require someone with solid underground mining and management experience, this exciting opportunity will see you taking responsibility for the following areas:


  • Operational safety of the mine and compliance to health, safety and environmental activity
  • Both short and long term strategic planning of the mine, ensuring that we work to continuously improve
  • Work closely with our geological team to ensure mineral availability plans are in place and followed
  • Ensure that our statutory obligations around mining are maintained and developed
  • Work closely with our planning and engineering teams to ensure strategic goals and optimum OEE including capital investment
  • Have foresight and plan the development of our existing workforce ensuring succession plans are in place and we invest in people for the future
  • Drive WCM (World Class Manufacturing) working with onsite teams to develop and embrace digitalisation where possible


What kind of person are we looking for?

First and foremost, we always want to recruit talented people that align well with our values and way of working. In addition to the five Saint-Gobain attitudes we shared at the start, suitability for the role is always key; does the following criteria sound like you?

  • Have a passion for health & safety and ensure that this comes before anything we do  
  • Demonstrable experience in management within an underground mining position (ideally coal or hard rock)
  • Experience managing teams working towards and managing clear goals
  • A degree in Mining or Minerals Engineering or a similar engineering competency
  • Strong communication skills, the ability to interact at all levels whilst keeping a rational business minded approach to decision making  
  • Qualified WCM instructor/practitioner (Would be advantageous)
