Position description

The role

We are looking for an Industrial Property Development manager to strengthen the team in the fields of Construction solutions with a strong focus on Gypsum and Cementitious materials, yet with a transversal span across other system components like Insulation, Mortars and Construction Chemicals.

The position is motivated by a business willingness to develop IP vision supporting the strategic axis of the Gypsum activity as a lever to sustain leadership.

The mission involves maintaining strong technological understanding of the domain and intellectual property knowledge to develop robust protection strategies and coordinate actions of expert functions (research, industry, legal, patent) to implement these strategies with market success in mind.

The primary target for the IP development manager will be to harness the potential of new ideas and collaborations driven by the group’s sustainability agenda.

The role will be performed in close connection with Saint-Gobain colleagues at all levels, from inventors to local Directors, Central R&D leaders, Marketing heads, Industry, Sustainability, Finance, Legal and Executive leaders, with constant interaction with outside or in-house legal or IP counsels who are in charge of the expert contract or patent work.

Based in the Central IP team in Courbevoie, under the direction of Construction IP Director. The role involves up to 25% domestic and international travelling, notably to visit technical centers and IP departments, especially in Europe and the United Kingdom.

Functions and Responsibilities

  • IP support to R&D projects and Business projects – perform IP check points with project leaders from state-of-the art to pre-launch patent clearance, identify potential intellectual property, assist in documenting for invention disclosure, know how or trade secret dockets, prepare for reviews and decisions by IP steering committees
  • Technological, patent and competitive watch – obtain the relevant information and organise alert feeds for the innovation community, conduct analysis together with technical and market experts and deliver IP intelligence reports, provide synthesis and analytics studies for different level of management
  • Develop and maintain IP dashboards and implement patent strategies
  • Perform IP reviews with the business, assess value of IP against market needs and competition offer, and more generally contribute to the IP portfolio management
  • Harvest inventions, conduct creative workshops to accelerate maturation of ideas into inventions in strategic areas
  • Guide the patent drafting and prosecution through examination, defense and enforcement actions
  • Assist in preparation of non-disclosure agreements, joint-development agreements, or other technical and commercial collaboration contracts for IP aspects

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Engineer or Masters degree preferably in Material Science or Chemistry
  • 10+ years of industry experience with a demonstrable experience in conducting research or innovation projects, including extensive exposure to patent drafting as an inventor, a research manager or patent correspondent
  • IP related degree or certificate (typically CEIPI, IEEPI), Patent Agent or Patent Attorney qualification before a patent office will be a clear plus
  • Fluent in English, other language (preferably French) appreciated
  • Excellent communication skills, especially written communication
  • Good influencing skills and entrepreneurial spirit
  • Ability to develop a strategic vision, plan for execution and onboard stakeholders
  • Strong attention to detail, ability to handle great amount of data and summarise clearly
