We’re looking for a Timber Support Manager, which is a regional role operating within the current Jewson region geography, servicing all SGBD brands that take timber and sheet materials via any of the central category deals. You have 2 key result areas: 1. Help and support & 2. Assess and develop. The ideal candidate should have extensive timber industry knowledge to support market share growth, assist £ margin development and deliver a best in class customer experience in the timber and sheet material category. This will require very ‘hands on’ approach, so we’re looking for someone who will be dedicated to the role and has the drive to be successful.


What you’ll be doing as a Timber Support Manager:


Help & Support


  • Work with Timber Specialist Branches (TSBs) to ensure core elements of the ‘specialism’ are maintained and enhanced particularly range and knowledge
  • Lead regional roll-out of the Category Plan
  • Lead and implement Category projects as required
  • Monitor stock quality and provide support to resolve any issues arising by working with Operations and Suppliers
  • Merchandising - engage with key suppliers to support all aspects of the role (training, stock, POS etc)
  • Provide regular feedback to Operations and Category on competitor pricing and local market developments
  • Provide best practice guidance on display, storage & handling of Timber Products
  • Cultivate a high level of local competitor awareness


Assess & Develop


  • Using the Timber Scorecard undertake branch assessments and formulate development / improvement plans and regularly monitor and update
  • Develop and improve the knowledge base of branch teams by delivering Timber training at Introductory & Intermediate levels
  • Identify Timber Specialist Branches (TSBs) within the Region using branch assessment tools
  • Seek opportunities to develop the product and service proposition within branch (specialist and local ranges etc)
  • Interrogate Core Range performance and intervene as required to ensure target of +98% compliance
  • Create strong Regional and Area alliances
    • Attend Regional and Area meetings
    • Become the Region’s ‘go to technical timber person (timber guru)’
  • A conduit between Operations and Category


What we’re looking for in a Timber Support Manager:

  • Proven building / construction and timber industry experience
  • Extensive customer service understanding relating to both merchants and key timber industry clients preferred
  • Professional and customer service related qualifications / training desirable
  • Experience in an external customer facing role would be an advantage
  • Ability to build long lasting relationships and trust with customers and colleagues
  • Strong relationship management skills and Good interpersonal skills
  • Ability to contribute at senior level to the further development of category service proposition
  • Excellent presentation, verbal and written communication skills are essential
  • Experience in and fully understands timber merchant industry and merchant customer
  • Proven experience in developing working relationships at all levels within a customer’s organisation
  • Proven ability to influence key decision makers at all levels to achieve results
  • Numerate and problem solving skills are essential
  • Strong analytical skills with good level of computer literacy and numeracy
  • Able to deliver business change programmes that deliver against agreed strategic priorities
