Position description

Reporting to the Reliability Maintenanace Manager, the Automation and Maintenance (A/M) Engineer/Specialist will provide leadership in the implementation, support, and functioning of site maintenance systems and PLC-based control/PC-based supervisory systems at the Calgary Board Plant.  Specific focus will be placed on ensuring the maintenance activities of the plant are achieving plant targets continuous improvement processes are being carried out. 

Accountabilities include:

  • Maintain a safe working environment.  Must recognize unsafe conditions and practices and make corrections to prevent injuries and property loss. Required to support or complete safety audits/inspections of the assigned work area, thorough investigations of incidents and accidents, job safety analysis and have periodic safety meetings.

  • Oversee maintenance function of the plant, parts, equipment, monitor and report improvement and preventative maintenance objectives.

  • Communicate with all CertainTeed employees to build trust and effective teamwork. 

  • Monitor and review maintenance work requirements and results, co-ordinate use of contractors and ensure maintenance activities are maintained and continuous improvements evaluated.

  • Active support for and involvement in the WCM processes consistent with Plant, Automation and Maintenance objectives

  • Monitor production processes and product quality to ensure correct procedures are followed for quality production, and oversee employee training for operators and maintenance personnel.

  • Evaluate source of equipment problems (troubleshooting), and utilize WCM techniques to achieve operational targets.

  • Technical support and enhancement of PLC-based production control systems and supervisory/SCADA systems, Plant data communication networks, and other automation issues.

  • Identify new opportunities and solutions with cost/benefit analysis, implement Best Practices.

  • Coordinate automation projects with responsibility for technical content, budgeting, cost management and on-time completion and effective ultimate functionality.

  • Prepare RFQ’s adjudicate the responses and manage contractor resources.

  • Ensure full documentation of all projects and systems, as actually built.

  • Other duties and projects as required.


  • Engineer will have an electrical engineering degree and carry a Professional Engineering designation to practice professional engineering in the province.  Specialist will have an Electrical engineering degree or college diploma or equivalent industry experience.

  • Minimum of five years experience in development and implementation of PC-based supervisory and PLC-control systems.

  • Technical knowledge of maintenance manufacturing activities, ability to monitor and make recommendations for maintenance and related equipment and process improvements.

  • Experience in electrical, process control, instrumentation, automation, and computer and data communication systems.

  • Understanding of integrated automation and information systems in a manufacturing environment. Previous experience working in a continuous process industry is a necessity.

  • Ability to program Allen-Bradley and Modicon PLC’s and Intellution FIX and Wonderware PC-based supervisory systems. Ability to specify and set up said systems’ hardware, software, data communications and fieldbus networks.

  • Familiarity with variable speed drives and servo systems.

  • Experienced with National Electrical Code (NEC) and Arc-Flash (NFPA-70) code requirements.

  • Understands Burner Flames Safety controls (NFPA-86) combustion controls

  • Team player with good interpersonal, communication and customer service skills to operate effectively in a team environment.

  • Innovative and able to demonstrate initiative.

  • Leadership abilities and ability to make independent decisions when required.
